Instagram "Follow to Unlock" DMs: How Reply-to-Unlock Really Works
Reply-to-unlock sends your link only after someone replies to your first DM: how to set it up in SocialAutoDM, what a reply keyword does, and why no tool can check whether they actually followed you.
In this video
- Turning on “Require a reply before sending the DM”
- The first message (sent right away) and the optional reply word
- The message they unlock
- What your follower sees, including a reply without the word
- Why no tool can check a follow, and what to promise instead
About this tutorial
Reply-to-unlock holds your link back until the person replies. When someone comments your keyword, SocialAutoDM posts your public reply and sends a first message right away, asking them to follow and to reply with a word. If you set a confirmation keyword, their reply must contain it, in any capitals; a reply without it sends nothing, and a later reply can still unlock the link. Leave the keyword empty and any reply works. Instagram and Facebook do not let any tool check who follows you, so the link is sent on the reply, whether they followed or not: ask for the follow, but never promise to check it. It works the same on Instagram and on Facebook Pages.

In this video: reply-to-unlock. Your link goes out only after someone replies to your first message. Here's how it works, and what it can't do.
Open the post's Automation rules. I'll use the open crumb post.
The trigger is CRUMB, with Contains.
Add the public reply, as usual.
Now turn on Require a reply before sending the DM.
This is the first message they get, sent right away. Ask them to follow, and to reply with a word.
Here is that word: READY. Their reply has to contain it. Leave this empty, and any reply unlocks the link.
And this is the message they unlock, with your link.
Create the rule. Its card now says Reply-gated DM.
On your follower’s phone: they comment CRUMB, and your public reply appears.
Then your first message arrives, asking them to reply READY.
If they reply something else, nothing is sent yet. The rule keeps waiting for the word.
When they reply READY, the link goes out right away.
One thing to know: Instagram and Facebook don't let any tool check who follows you. So the link is sent when they reply, whether they followed or not. Ask for the follow, but don't promise to check it.
So why use it? Everyone who replies has started a real conversation with you, and asked for the link themselves.
That's reply-to-unlock. Next up: comment-to-DM for online stores. See you in the next video!
SocialAutoDM works with Instagram Business/Creator accounts and Facebook Pages via Meta’s official APIs. The bakery in this video is a fictional demo account.
